PCMC: 5,459 mosquito-breeding sites found in Pimpri

Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Health Department took steps to curb contagious diseases such as dengue and malaria. The department found larvae of mosquitoes in 5,459 containers after checking 2,69,754 houses. Fines amounting to over Rs 8.80 lakh were recovered from property owners.

The Health Department conducted a drive in this regard from June 1 to August 31. As many as 992 scrap dealers and tyre shops, 1,154 construction sites were checked and 3,530 containers were emptied. Over 1,200 people were issued notices. Over Rs 8.82 lakh fine was recovered from commercial and residential property owners. Rs 1,000 fine is taken from residential property owners, Rs 8,000 from commercial property owners and Rs 10,000 each is recovered from malls, hospitals and construction sites.

Air and water pollution is rising due to growing urbanization. Infections are spreading fast in cities. Vector-borne diseases such as dengue and chikungunya have been rising. Dengue-spreading mosquitoes were found on society premises, in flower pots and trays of refrigerators, at hospitals and government offices. Such establishments have been issued notices, said Health Officer Ganesh Deshpande.

People should not store water. They should cover utensils containing water. All containers should be emptied once a week. Dengue mosquitoes breed in clean water. They should take care that water does not remain stagnated, said Assistant Municipal Commissioner Yashwant Dange.
