The congestion, spanning over 2 km between Dattawadi and Amrutanjan bridge, resulted from increased tourist traffic on the expressway.
The highway safety patrol had to implement temporary closures, shutting a 2.7 km long stretch of the Mumbai-bound carriageway between 9 am and 11.30 am. The closures were initiated for 22 minutes and 21 minutes respectively to facilitate the clearing of the vehicular pileup.
