As the coastal road project in Mumbai reaches a completion milestone of 84%, the state government is gearing up to open a segment of the road for public use. The stretch from Worli to Marine Drive is expected to be operational for commuters in the second week of February, presenting a partial solution ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Despite the initial opening, the entire project is slated for completion by May 2024.
The coastal road will host eight stops for BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport) buses, providing a convenient mode of public transportation along this scenic route. Notably, the road will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
With a speed limit ranging between 80 to 100 km per hour, the coastal road is designed to facilitate swift travel for vehicles. Ensuring safety, the route will feature 24 CCTV cameras, 30 video incident detection systems, and 80 emergency phone systems placed every 100 meters.
The first phase of the coastal road, spanning 10.58 km from Princes Street to Worli Sea Link, is set to kick off in February 2024. This segment will connect South Mumbai to Worli, promising enhanced connectivity for Mumbaikars.
Reserved exclusively for BEST buses and emergency vehicles, the fourth lane on the Coastal Road aims to accommodate public transportation efficiently. The road is set to feature 8 to 10 bus stops, offering an accessible means of travel for those without personal vehicles.
