The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sounded the alarm as Mumbai prepares to face a barrage of high tidal waves looming over its shores in the next 36 hours. Residents are being strongly advised to steer clear of the seafront until Sunday night to avoid potential dangers.
The alert comes following warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the National Institute for Oceanography (NIO), predicting tidal waves reaching heights of 0.5-1.5 meters along Mumbai’s coastline.
In response, the BMC has taken proactive measures to safeguard public well-being. Lifeguards and marshals have been stationed along the seafront to enforce a strict ban on sea access. Additionally, residents residing in low-lying areas have been encouraged to temporarily relocate to safer locales, with municipal schools and community halls opened for accommodation purposes.
Recognizing the vulnerability of the fisherfolk community, efforts have been made to ensure the safety of their vessels. Fisherfolk have been advised to anchor their boats away from rocky shores to prevent potential collisions and damage.
The BMC emphasizes the importance of cooperation from citizens, tourists, and weekend revelers, urging them to refrain from visiting beaches or any sea-facing areas during this period. By adhering to these precautions, the public can play a vital role in averting potential risks associated with the anticipated high tidal waves.
With the Arabian Sea primed for surges, it is imperative for all stakeholders to exercise caution. Fisherfolk are particularly reminded to exercise vigilance and secure their boats effectively to mitigate any adverse impacts.
