Pune, July 29, 2023: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light rain in the Konkan, Ghat areas, and Vidarbha regions of Maharashtra over the next two days, with a decrease in intensity compared to previous days.
Dr. Anupam Kashyapi, the head of weather forecasting at IMD Pune, explained that the west-east low-pressure belt of monsoonal winds has shifted northwards, leading to a reduction in the intensity of the low-pressure area over South Chhattisgarh.
Moreover, the area between two opposing winds in the upper atmosphere has moved southward, which is not favorable for sustaining monsoon rains in the state. As a result, light rain is expected in certain areas of Konkan, Ghat areas, and Vidarbha for the next two days, along with scattered showers along the coast. However, from the start of August, the IMD predicts a dry spell with limited rainfall across Maharashtra.
During this period, monsoon activity is expected to become more active in regions like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, etc., due to the northward movement of the west-east low-pressure belt of monsoon winds.
Light showers are likely to subside in Maharashtra starting today, and over the next two days, only a few places in Konkan coast, Ghat areas, and East Vidarbha may experience light rain. After that, the intensity of rainfall is expected to decrease. On Saturday, a yellow alert has been issued for the Konkan coast, Satara, Ghat area of Pune district, and Vidarbha.
Factors influencing August Monsoon:
- Westerly-easterly low-pressure belt of monsoonal winds moving northwards.
- Reduction in the intensity of the low-pressure area over South Chhattisgarh.
- Movement of an area between two opposing winds in the upper atmosphere southward.
- Current condition showing a cloudless Bay of Bengal.
- El-Nino is active, but its impact on the monsoon seems limited.
- Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is in a neutral position, not significantly affecting the monsoon.
