NCR Metro and Namo Bharat Metro to Embrace Solar Energy: Paving the Way for Sustainable Transportation

As India marches towards a greener future, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is leading the charge with an innovative initiative that promises to revolutionize the country’s transportation landscape. In a landmark decision, the proposed metro line connecting Noida International Airport and Ghaziabad is set to harness the power of solar energy, ensuring uninterrupted 24-hour supply and heralding a new era of sustainable urban mobility.

A Vision for Sustainability

At the heart of this transformative project lies a commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Recognizing the imperative to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change, NCRTC has devised a comprehensive plan to integrate renewable energy sources into its transportation infrastructure.

Solar-Powered Solutions

The cornerstone of this initiative is the extensive deployment of solar energy technologies along the NCR metro and Namo Bharat train corridors. To achieve this ambitious goal, NCRTC will establish five-megawatt solar power plants at strategic locations, including Namo Bharat stations. These solar installations are projected to meet up to 50% of the project’s energy requirements, ensuring a reliable and eco-friendly power supply round the clock.

A Sustainable Partnership

Central to the success of this endeavor is the collaboration with Renewable Energy Service Companies (RESCOs), which will oversee the development and operation of solar power plants across the project area. Under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA), NCRTC will procure solar energy from these RESCOs, laying the foundation for a long-term partnership aimed at driving sustainability and energy independence.

Solar Integration Along the Ghaziabad-Airport Corridor

The integration of solar energy infrastructure will extend across key stations along the Ghaziabad-Airport corridor, including Ecotech-6, Knowledge Park 5 in Greater Noida, and Pratap Vihar in Ghaziabad. By harnessing solar power along the 72.2-kilometer corridor, NCRTC is not only ensuring reliable energy supply but also reducing its carbon footprint and promoting cleaner, greener transportation solutions.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

Beyond its environmental benefits, the adoption of solar energy holds significant economic advantages for NCRTC. By reducing reliance on conventional electricity sources, the project is poised to generate substantial cost savings over its operational lifespan, thereby enhancing financial sustainability and ensuring the long-term viability of metro and Namo Bharat train services.
