Delhi’s Air Quality Emergency: NDMC Doubles Parking Fees Amidst Pollution Crisis

New Delhi is grappling with a pollution crisis, and now vehicle owners have another reason to worry. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has taken a bold step to address the alarming air quality levels by doubling parking fees across the city. This decision, in line with the guidelines of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), aims to curb unnecessary vehicle use until January 31, 2024, as Delhi contends with the post-Diwali smog.

NDMC’s Order: What Does It Entail?

  1. Parking Fee Hike: Effective immediately, the NDMC has announced a twofold increase in parking charges for both off-road and on-road parking, lasting until January 31, 2024.
  2. GRAP’s Phase IV Implementation: The sub-committee has decided to implement all actions under the ‘Severe+’ category (Delhi AQI >450) across the National Capital Region (NCR), adding to the existing phases I, II, and III actions.

Delhi’s Air Quality Worsens Post-Diwali

Despite restrictions, Diwali celebrations in Delhi led to a surge in air pollution, with some areas recording AQI levels beyond 600. Even after temporary relief brought by rain, the pollution levels have risen once again.

🌬️ The Impact:

The NDMC’s decision to double parking fees is a direct response to the post-Diwali pollution spike. With the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching hazardous levels, the increased parking fees are part of a comprehensive strategy to discourage unnecessary vehicle use. This move aligns with a broader effort to promote cleaner air in the capital city.
