Verizon and Audi Collaborate to Forge a Cutting-Edge Private 5G Network at Audi’s Neustadt Test Track

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Verizon Business has joined forces with Audi to establish a private 5G wireless network and advanced technology testing environment at Audi’s Neustadt test track in Germany. This innovative initiative aims to provide a comprehensive testing ground for various automotive technologies, leveraging the power of a private 5G network to simulate connectivity environments from around the world.

Verizon’s private 5G network is designed to replicate the complexities of real-world connectivity scenarios by utilizing multiple cores, radio frequencies, and network technologies. The goal is to create a testing environment that closely mirrors the conditions found in the United States, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region.

The project involves the construction of custom-built replicas of the Verizon public network in the US, local European networks, and Audi’s MVNO partner networks in the Asia-Pacific region. Audi, along with other brands from the Volkswagen Group, will have exclusive access to both the test track and the private network.

The private 5G network at the Audi test track will feature a dual 5G and LTE Modular Private Wireless platform provided by Nokia, private multi-access edge-compute (MEC) capability from Amazon Web Services, real-time video and data transmission technology by Smart Mobile Labs, and C-V2X communication. This cutting-edge infrastructure will support a wide range of testable applications, including voice, video, safety features, autonomous mobility, vehicle-to-cloud communication, and cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) functionalities.

Audi expressed its satisfaction with the comprehensive solution provided by Verizon Business, stating, “Our needs for this test track were complex and multi-dimensional, encompassing many technologies, geographic network conditions, and industry trends. Verizon Business was able to provide a complete solution that will take time and cost out of the testing cycle and give us a competitive advantage in the global marketplace.”

Verizon emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “This is about much more than equipping a work site with a private network. This is about bringing network conditions from around the world to one test facility, revolutionizing the way automotive technologies are tested and validated.”
