Telekom Deutschland Connects 83 Percent of 5G Sites via Fiber Optics

Telekom Deutschland, a leading German telecommunications service provider, is significantly enhancing the 5G experience for its users by leveraging advanced technology. The company recently announced that it has successfully connected 83 percent of all 5G sites nationwide via fiber optics, providing users with lightning-fast 5G services. This high-speed connection is pivotal for efficiently and reliably managing the ever-growing mobile data traffic.

Investing in Network Infrastructure

Telekom Deutschland has made substantial investments in upgrading its network infrastructure to achieve this milestone. More than 10,000 5G sites now benefit from fiber-optic connections with speeds of up to 10 Gbps, accounting for nearly 40 percent of all Telekom’s 5G sites. This upgrade significantly enhances data throughput, boosting capacity and peak data rates for customers, especially in high-traffic areas.

Future Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, Telekom plans to equip over 28,000 mobile network locations with 10 Gbps high-speed connections by 2026. This ambitious expansion is driven by the rapid growth in mobile data traffic, which is increasing by approximately 30 percent annually. Meeting user expectations for speed and capacity requires such advanced network expansion.

Fiber Optic Backbone

At the core of this 10 Gbps connection is Telekom’s use of fiber optic connections for the mobile communications transport network. This ensures the fastest and most sustainable data transmission. Fiber optic lines connect radio sites with central nodes within Telekom’s mobile communications transport network, consisting of 900 central exchanges across Germany.

Mobile Radio Gateways

Telekom has also deployed state-of-the-art mobile radio gateways to facilitate 10 Gbps data rates. These gateways enable faster data processing during the transition between the transport network and mobile radio antennas. The deployment of these gateways began in 2018 and was completed in 2022.

Ensuring Reliability

To ensure fail-safe operations, mobile network sites with a 10 Gbps connection are connected via separate fiber lines to two different central transport network nodes. This redundancy enhances the reliability of the network.

5G at 3.6 GHz Frequency

Telekom’s 5G antennas operating on the 3.6 GHz frequency band benefit significantly from the 10 Gbps fiber optic connection. Users can experience speeds of up to 1 Gbps, enabling seamless surfing, streaming, and downloads on the go. Currently, more than 750 towns and cities across Germany enjoy the power of the fastest 5G.

Expanding 5G Coverage

Telekom’s 5G network already covers over 80 million people in Germany, exceeding 95 percent of the population. With more than 80,000 mobile antennas transmitting 5G, the expansion continues, with a goal to cover 99 percent of the German population by 2025.

Telekom Deutschland’s commitment to enhancing its network infrastructure and expanding 5G coverage ensures that users across Germany can enjoy high-speed and reliable connectivity in an increasingly digital world.
