Revamped Ola Bike-Taxi Service in Bengaluru Goes Green with Electric Fleet

Ola Re-Launches Bike-Taxi Services in Bengaluru With a Twist: All 2-Wheelers Are Now Electric!

Ola, one of India’s leading ride-hailing platforms, has announced the revival of its bike-taxi services in Bengaluru, marking a significant return to the city after a three-year hiatus. What sets this revival apart is the green twist – all two-wheelers in this fleet are now electric, aligning with Ola’s commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly transportation.

Founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal took to Twitter to share the exciting news of Ola’s bike-taxi services making a comeback. However, this time, the service is not just about convenience and efficiency but also about environmental responsibility.

An All-Electric Fleet for Greener Commutes

The bike-taxi service in Bengaluru boasts an all-electric fleet, featuring vehicles like the Ola S1 electric scooters. This move signifies Ola’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner modes of transportation within the city. Electric two-wheelers not only offer a quieter and smoother ride but also contribute significantly to reducing air pollution.

Affordable and Environmentally Friendly Rides

In a tweet, Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal shared the pricing details for the newly revived service. He stated, “₹25 for 5km, ₹50 for 10km. Lowest cost, very comfortable and great for the environment! Will scale across India over the next few months.” These competitive rates make Ola’s electric bike-taxis an attractive and affordable option for city commuters.

The Return After Three Years

Ola’s re-entry into Bengaluru’s bike-taxi market follows a hiatus of three years. The service initially started in 2016 but faced challenges from the state’s transport department concerning the safety and legality of two-wheeler taxis. As a result, it was suspended in 2019.

Challenges and Opposition

The move to reintroduce bike-taxi services in Bengaluru is not without its share of challenges and opposition. Karnataka State Minister Ramalinga Reddy has expressed concerns over the safety of riders, particularly women, and is working toward permanently banning another two-wheeler taxi service, Rapido bike taxis.

The Federation of Karnataka State Private Transport Association, which represents 36 bus, taxi, and goods vehicle unions, recently called for a strike, including demands for regulating bike taxi services. In response, Minister Reddy has affirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns raised by auto and taxi drivers in the state.

As Ola’s electric bike-taxis hit the streets of Bengaluru once again, it marks a notable step toward sustainable urban mobility. The shift to an all-electric fleet aligns with India’s broader efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and combat air pollution, making eco-friendly transportation a reality for many city dwellers.
