Toyota’s India Expansion: Mid-Size SUV to Challenge Tata and Mahindra

Toyota is gearing up to expand its presence in the Indian automotive market with a new mid-size SUV that aims to compete with popular models like the Tata Harrier and Mahindra XUV700. This move is part of Toyota’s strategy to strengthen its portfolio and continue its growth trajectory in India.

Toyota’s New Mid-Size SUV: What We Know

The upcoming mid-size SUV, codenamed 340D, is expected to launch in early 2026 and is positioned to fill the gap between Toyota’s existing models, the HyRyder and the larger Innova Hycross. Toyota has ambitious plans to sell approximately 60,000 units of this new SUV annually.

Production for this SUV will take place at Toyota’s new facility in Bidadi, Karnataka, which is currently under construction. This facility will be Toyota’s third manufacturing plant at the same location and is set to significantly boost the company’s production capacity in India by up to 30%, from the current 400,000 units.

Powertrain and Competitors

In terms of powertrain options, Toyota is likely to offer both petrol and petrol-hybrid variants for the mid-size SUV. It’s expected that the new SUV may share powertrains with the Innova Hycross, which includes a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a 2.0-litre strong hybrid petrol engine.

Once launched, the Toyota 340D will enter a competitive segment, taking on rivals such as the Tata Harrier, MG Hector, and Mahindra XUV700. These models have established themselves as strong contenders in the mid-size SUV category, making the competition intense.

Toyota’s Potential “Mini” Land Cruiser

Additionally, Toyota is exploring the possibility of introducing a “mini” Land Cruiser in the Indian market. While this model is under consideration, Toyota has not yet made a final decision. If given the green light, parts for this model would be imported and assembled in India. While Toyota does not anticipate high sales volumes for this model, it showcases the company’s commitment to diversifying its product range in India.

Toyota’s partnership with Maruti Suzuki has rejuvenated its operations in India, and the introduction of new models, including the upcoming mid-size SUV, demonstrates Toyota’s commitment to catering to the evolving preferences of Indian consumers. With these strategic moves, Toyota aims to solidify its position and become a formidable player in the Indian automotive landscape.
