Tata Motors’ Electric Revolution: Rural Markets and First-Time Buyers Drive EV Surge

In a groundbreaking revelation, Tata Motors unveiled intriguing data about its electric vehicle (EV) segment during a recent internal event. With a substantial market share exceeding 70 percent, the findings shed light on the evolving landscape of EV ownership and usage patterns based on the analysis of over 1 lakh EVs already sold by the company.

First-Time EV Buyers Take the Lead: Surprisingly, Tata Motors reported that 23 percent of its EV owners are first-time car buyers, a remarkable statistic considering lingering apprehensions about EV ownership. Shailesh Chandra, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility MD, expressed delight, stating, “With so many EV owners being first-time car buyers, it means fears and doubts around EV ownership are quickly disappearing.” Impressively, 75 percent of EV owners revealed that they use their electric vehicles as their primary mode of transportation.

Rural Markets Powering EV Sales: A striking revelation is that 50 percent of Tata Motors’ EV sales originate from rural areas, challenging the perception that EV adoption is primarily an urban phenomenon. Despite facing challenges such as a sparse charging network and power quality issues, these owners rely on home charging, primarily overnight, to overcome these hurdles. Tata Motors highlighted that 93 percent of its EV owners choose home or office charging, predominantly between 6-11 pm. The data leveraged from 1.4 billion kilometers of EV usage is aiding Tata Motors in refining and optimizing its EV products.

Empowering Women in EV Ownership: Tata Motors celebrated another milestone as 24 percent of its EVs were purchased by women, twice the industry average for female buyers. Shailesh Chandra emphasized, “Women buyers are clearly seeing the benefits of EVs and are readily embracing this new technology.”

EVs Clocking Higher Mileage: Data from the on-board connectivity suite revealed that, on average, EVs are driven for 26 days a month, marking a substantial 23 percent increase compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The monthly average running distance reached 1,400 km, surpassing ICE vehicles by 10 percent.
