Stellantis Contemplates Reviving Fiat in India Alongside Jeep and Citroen Focus

Stellantis, a global automotive giant and the third-largest car manufacturer by volumes, is reportedly exploring the possibility of reintroducing the Fiat brand and potentially other key brands to the Indian market. While the company’s primary focus remains on establishing the presence of the Jeep and Citroen brands, considerations are being made to revive Fiat and potentially introduce brands like Alfa Romeo to the Indian automotive landscape.

The move comes after Fiat Chrysler Automobile India, the predecessor of Stellantis before its integration in 2021, previously operated in the Indian market. However, due to low sales volumes and heightened competition, the production of Fiat vehicles was discontinued.

According to reports from The Economic Times (ET), Stellantis is deliberating on strategies to expand its offerings in India, including potential reintroduction of Fiat vehicles. The Senior Vice President of Stellantis, Billy Hayes, acknowledged the discussions surrounding the re-entry of Fiat into the Indian market. While the primary focus is currently on the forthcoming launches under the Jeep and Citroen banners, the possibility of bringing back Fiat has been a topic of interest.

Citroen, a subsidiary of Stellantis, is gearing up to introduce its C3 Aircross SUV to the Indian market in October, followed by another vehicle in early 2024. This launch is seen as a significant step for Stellantis in India, as it marks the brand’s entry into the competitive mid-size SUV segment, where it will contend with popular models like Hyundai Creta, Suzuki Grand Vitara, and Kia Seltos.

Fiat, one of the fourteen brands under the Stellantis umbrella, holds substantial recognition in the global car market. The success of the electric Fiat 500, a prominent A-segment hatchback, was noted, with a particularly strong reception in Japan and plans for a launch in Australia.

While the re-introduction of Fiat in India is still under consideration, Stellantis appears to be strategically evaluating its options to diversify its brand portfolio in the country. With the Indian automotive market being highly competitive and constantly evolving, Stellantis aims to make well-informed decisions that cater to the preferences and demands of Indian consumers.
