BMW Unveils Luxury Duo for India: New 5 Series and i5 LWB Set to Debut This Festive Season

In a significant move, BMW is set to launch the eighth-generation BMW 5 Series and its all-electric counterpart, the i5, in long-wheelbase (LWB) form during the upcoming 2024 festive season in India. This marks the debut of the 5 Series LWB in the country, targeted at the chauffeur-driven segment and designed to compete directly with the new-gen Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which is also anticipated to be introduced in a long-wheelbase variant later this year.

Extended Wheelbase for Enhanced Comfort

The long-wheelbase 5 Series, with a wheelbase about 110mm longer, aims to provide an elevated level of comfort for rear seat passengers. The exterior design maintains the signature BMW aesthetics, with notable features such as the illuminated grille and sleek tail-lamps. Notably, the ‘5’ on the C-pillar will be illuminated in different colors for ICE-powered and electric (i5) models.

Luxurious Interior with Innovative Entertainment

Inside, both the 5 Series LWB and i5 offer a familiar BMW interior design. The rear passenger area is the highlight, boasting extra legroom due to the extended wheelbase. Chauffeur-driven individuals will enjoy reclining rear seats, four-zone climate control, exclusive quilted upholstery, and a dual-tone design. An impressive 31.1-inch 32:9 display folds down from the headliner, providing an immersive entertainment experience with 8K resolution and 5G connectivity.

Powerful Performance and Sustainable Driving

The 5 Series LWB is expected to feature mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines in the Indian market, with 520Li, 530Li, and 520Ld variants. Meanwhile, the i5 is likely to debut in eDrive40 form, equipped with a 340hp rear axle-mounted motor driven by an 81.2kWh battery pack, offering a maximum range of 582km. The i5’s sustainability focus aligns with the growing demand for electric vehicles in the luxury segment.

Anticipated Price and Market Competition

The 5 Series LWB is positioned as a direct rival to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 70 lakh-80 lakh (ex-showroom), providing a competitive alternative to the upcoming E-Class launch. The i5, with its unique electric offering, is anticipated to be priced in the Rs 90 lakh-1 crore (ex-showroom) region, establishing itself as a distinct choice in the luxury electric vehicle segment.
