Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) is set to commence the construction of an underground tunnel connecting the T1 and T2 airsides of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The project, which has been in the planning stages for several years, is expected to cost between Rs 500-600 crore and take 12-16 months to complete. Work is scheduled to begin after the monsoon season.
Project Overview
The underground tunnel will be a three-lane passage running beneath both cross runways of the airport. It will facilitate the airside transfer of passengers, baggage, cargo, and ground support staff. The project will be carried out in two phases, starting with drilling from T2 to the south side and then extending to T1.
Phased Construction Plan
The construction process will be phased to minimize disruptions:
- Phase 1: Drilling and construction from T2 towards the south side of the airport.
- Phase 2: Extending the tunnel from the south side to T1.
Infrastructure Enhancement
This development is part of a broader effort to enhance the infrastructure at CSMIA, especially in light of the impending opening of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) by March next year. Upon NMIA’s completion, various facilities, including hangars, cargo, and general aviation, will be relocated from CSMIA to NMIA. This relocation will allow for additional aircraft parking stands and the demolition of T1 to build a new terminal.
Waterlogging Prevention Measures
To prevent waterlogging in the tunnel, MIAL, in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), is working on improving the nullah that connects to the Mithi River. This is crucial for ensuring the tunnel remains operational during heavy rains.
Project Delays and Renewed Momentum
The tunnel project was postponed multiple times, initially due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely impacted air travel and led to the deferment of several capital projects. The Adani Group’s acquisition of MIAL in 2021 provided renewed momentum for the project, aligning it with ongoing efforts to expand CSMIA’s infrastructure.
Timeline and Contingencies
While detailed plans are still being finalized, MIAL has indicated that the tunnel work will begin this year, contingent upon the severity of the monsoon season.
