Twitter Rebrands Android App to X, iOS App’s Fate Unknown

In a bold move, Twitter has undergone a major rebranding, transforming its Android app into “X” and replacing the familiar blue bird logo and name with the new identity. The company’s description of the app touts “X” as the trusted digital town square for all, where users can post content for the world to see, participate in public conversations, and stay updated on breaking news.

The X app offers a range of features, allowing users to go live with Spaces for audio or stream live video and communicate privately through Direct Messages. Additionally, users can opt for the Twitter Blue subscription, which grants them a blue checkmark and more, expanding their reach and enabling them to create exclusive content for paid subscribers while sharing in the ad revenue generated in replies to their posts. The platform also allows users to upload and watch videos up to three hours in length, among other functionalities.

Although the Android app has successfully embraced its new identity as “X,” it remains unclear when Twitter will rebrand its iOS application to align with the fresh look and name.

The rebranding process started when Twitter’s owner, Elon Musk, teased the change in a series of tweets, hinting at bidding adieu to the Twitter brand and all the birds. This culminated in the replacement of the Twitter blue bird with the X logo on the platform’s web version. The company’s official account’s name and picture were also changed to ‘X.’

Elaborating on the reasoning behind the rebranding, Musk stated that Twitter’s original name made sense when the platform was primarily for 140-character messages akin to birds tweeting. However, with the ability to post almost anything, including lengthy videos, the X identity is more fitting for the expanded functionalities and aspirations of the platform.

Moreover, Musk clarified that X Corp acquired Twitter to safeguard freedom of speech and expedite the growth of X, described as the “everything app.” The company plans to add comprehensive communications and the capacity to conduct financial activities in the coming months, underscoring its commitment to broadening its scope and services.

As Twitter’s headquarters undergoes the transformation, workers were observed removing letters from the iconic vertical sign, but the process was momentarily halted by the authorities. The rebranding marks a significant shift for Twitter, signaling its ambition to evolve into a more comprehensive platform catering to a diverse range of user needs and interests.
