Rogers Enhances Toronto’s TTC Subway with 5G and Improved Connectivity

Rogers Communications, a prominent Canadian operator, has unveiled significant improvements to cellular connectivity within Toronto’s Transit Commission (TTC) subway system. In a recent announcement, Rogers revealed the introduction of 5G coverage and enhanced 911 access for riders traveling through some of the busiest stations and tunnels of the Toronto subway network.

5G Service on TTC’s Downtown U Rogers has not only launched its 5G service within the TTC’s Downtown U segment but has also upgraded the cellular network infrastructure to provide a more reliable connection to emergency 911 services. This effort aligns with the company’s phased network expansion and upgrade initiative.

Effective immediately, Rogers customers can now access the 5G network within selected areas of the TTC subway. This includes the entirety of Line 1, encompassing the Downtown U portion, as well as stations such as Spadina and Dupont. On Line 2, 5G coverage is available at thirteen stations from Keele to Castle Frank. Even the underground tunnels connecting St. George and Yonge stations have been integrated into the 5G network.

Elevated 911 Services Rogers expressed its dedication to enhancing the commuting experience for Toronto’s riders. The company stated, “That’s why Rogers stepped up to do what’s right for Toronto transit riders. We’re working hard to modernize and expand the network so all riders can reliably access 911 and connect to 5G everywhere across the subway system, including underground. Today is an important milestone, and we’re just getting started.”

Investment and Acquisitions Following its recent acquisition of BAI Canada, Rogers has partnered with TTC to modernize Toronto’s outdated cellular infrastructure. The aim is to support multiple wireless operators while ensuring coverage for Freedom Mobile users. This involves upgrading the network with advanced equipment, fiber connectivity, and additional spectrum bands to provide 5G connectivity and enhance 3G/4G network quality.

Enhanced Infrastructure Rogers is investing substantial funds, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars, to implement both 5G connectivity and improved 911 access across all 75 subway stations and nearly 80 kilometers of subway track. Unlike the previous network, this upgrade will enable riders to access 911 services throughout the subway system, addressing text, voice, and data traffic from various mobile carriers. This infrastructure improvement aims to meet the growing connectivity needs of Toronto’s subway commuters.
