Pune’s Tax Debacle: PMC to Seize and Auction Over 400 Properties

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced its decision to auction more than 400 properties that have been sealed due to the failure of their owners to settle their outstanding property taxes. This move comes after numerous attempts to remind and prompt the delinquent residents to clear their property tax dues have gone unanswered. Officials reveal that some of these property tax debts have remained unpaid for several years, leading to the municipal corporation’s action to seize the properties.

The sheer number of properties involved in this situation is alarming, exceeding 400 in total. PMC had previously issued multiple notices to these property owners, urgently requesting them to address their overdue tax payments. Regrettably, these property owners have consistently failed to comply with these reminders, according to municipal officials. The total outstanding property tax dues in Pune have now reached a staggering sum, exceeding Rs 8,000 crores, and this figure encompasses a diverse range of defaulters, including industries, commercial complexes, IT parks, hospitals, and even mobile tower owners.

For the fiscal year 2022-23, a significant amount of Rs 148.52 crore was owed from 2,512 properties. As we transition into the current fiscal year, a concerning 1,591 property owners have collectively accumulated an outstanding property tax debt of approximately Rs 95.18 crore, as reported by municipal officials.
