Pune Lok Sabha Contenders: Rising from Activism to Politics, Delivering Mixed Results

Examining the Campaign Trail of First-Generation Politicians Murlidhar Mohol, Ravindra Dhangekar, and Vasant More

In the race for the Pune Lok Sabha seat, three prominent contenders—Murlidhar Mohol, Ravindra Dhangekar, and Vasant More—emerge as first-generation politicians, with their journeys marked by activism and municipal service.

Mohol, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), boasts a robust political resume, having served as both mayor and standing committee chief in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Dhangekar, contesting on the Congress ticket, leverages his experience as a former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Kasba Peth. Meanwhile, More, nominated by the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), brings his tenure as the leader of his party in the civic body to the electoral fray.

Notably, these candidates lack political lineage, ascending to their positions through grassroots activism and community involvement. Their backgrounds in Ganesh Mandals before entering municipal politics underscore their grassroots connections and local ties.

Throughout their tenures as corporators, they have been lauded for spearheading infrastructure projects, including road construction, garden development, and flyover initiatives. However, persistent challenges such as traffic congestion, encroachment, and water scarcity continue to plague their constituencies.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Mohol highlights his efforts in procuring medical equipment and establishing temporary healthcare facilities. He emphasizes proposed initiatives to address traffic issues and enhance healthcare infrastructure, including the establishment of a PMC medical college.

Dhangekar’s recent victory in a bypoll underscores his strong citizen engagement and reputation for assisting constituents in times of need. More, known for his assertive leadership in the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), has transitioned to the VBA, leveraging his social media presence and grassroots support.

Reflecting on their contributions, Mohol underscores initiatives such as the Chandani Chowk Flyover project and infrastructure development post-Ambil Odha tragedy. Dhangekar emphasizes his focus on the Pune Metro project and slum redevelopment schemes, while More highlights his efforts in waste management and community health initiatives.

Despite their individual accomplishments, each candidate faces scrutiny over unaddressed issues and incomplete projects. As the electoral contest unfolds, their records and promises will come under further scrutiny, highlighting the complexities of local governance and the expectations placed on public representatives.
