Science Herp Count

Pune: The first Citizen Science Herp Count got underway on Friday (June 21) at Phansad in the State. Green Works Trust, along with the State Forest Department, Thane Wildlife Division, and the SBI Foundation have organised the initiative.

The three-day survey is being conducted from June 21 to 23 at the Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary in Raigad district. The organisers said that the Herp Count is a Citizen Science initiative that focuses on data collection of reptiles and amphibians through systematic observation and documentation techniques using scientific methods.

They claimed that it is the first such exercise in the State.

A number of nature lovers and experts are taking part in the survey and will contribute to the conservation of the exquisite creatures, said the organisers.

They said that the Phansad Herp Count is a long-term reptiles and amphibians monitoring activity under the ‘Sustainable Phansad’ programme of the Green Works Trust. The initiative has been supported by the SBI Foundation under its Conservation through Sustainable Engagements, Restoration and Wildlife Protection (CONSERW) programme.
