Pune Authorities Collaborate to Combat Misuse of Residential Properties for Commercial Purposes

Pune, 17th June 2023: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) have announced a joint effort to address the issue of property tax holders misusing residential properties for commercial purposes. The collaboration aims to identify such property owners and take appropriate actions against them, as property taxes differ based on the designated use of the property.

MSEDCL, also known as MahaVitaran, will provide PMC with crucial information regarding consumers who are utilizing their residential properties for commercial activities. This information will serve as the basis for PMC’s investigation into the matter and subsequent actions against the violators.

Ajit Deshmukh, the Head of PMC Tax Department, expressed concern over property owners using residential properties for commercial activities while paying taxes at residential rates. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the different tax structures for commercial and residential properties. To address this issue, PMC has partnered with MSEDCL to gather information on such properties and initiate investigations.

Pune Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar highlighted the PMC’s ongoing efforts to streamline property tax collection. Kumar emphasized that property owners who are utilizing their residential properties for commercial purposes should promptly inform the authorities and pay taxes according to the appropriate category. Failure to do so will result in legal action and the imposition of triple tax penalties on the offenders.

The collaborative initiative between PMC and MSEDCL aims to rectify the misclassification of properties and ensure fair taxation practices. By cracking down on those falsely categorizing their properties, the PMC seeks to uphold tax compliance and create a level playing field for all property owners in Pune. It is an important step towards promoting transparency and fairness in property tax assessment and collection.

Property owners in Pune are urged to abide by the designated use of their properties and pay taxes accordingly. The joint efforts of PMC and MSEDCL will help identify and rectify any misuse of residential properties for commercial purposes, ensuring a more equitable taxation system in the city.
