PMC’s Strategic Move: Road Under Metro Line to Relieve Traffic Woes on Pune’s Nagar Road

In a bid to alleviate traffic congestion on Pune’s Nagar Road, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has unveiled plans to construct a road under the metro viaduct, connecting Gunjan Talkies Chowk to Kalyani Nagar. This infrastructure development aims to streamline traffic flow and provide a more efficient route for commuters traveling towards key areas such as Kalyani Nagar, Kharadi, Magarpatta, Koregaon Park, Hadapsar, and more.

Vikas Dhakane, Additional Municipal Commissioner, PMC, shared insights on the project, stating, “A road will be constructed from Gunjan Talkies Chowk to Kalyani Nagar under the metro viaduct. This initiative aims to offer a direct route for commuters heading towards Kalyani Nagar and neighboring areas, providing added convenience for those traveling from Pune Airport to the other side of the city. With an expected width of approximately 18 meters, this road is poised to make a significant impact on reducing and easing traffic on Nagar Road.”

The decision to construct this additional road comes as a strategic response to the challenges posed by the stalling of the Kharadi-Shivane road project, which has faced delays due to land acquisition issues. While a considerable portion of the road from Kharadi to Gunjan Talkies Chowk is ready, the inability to connect it to Gunjan Talkies has hindered its usability.

The Maha Metro’s installation of a metro line passing through the Kharadi-Shivane road further complicated matters. In response, the PMC has taken the innovative step of constructing a road under the metro line, providing a seamless connection from Nagar Road.

According to Dhakane, the PMC has already floated tenders for the project, and the road construction is expected to be completed within a month. This development holds promise for not only improving the connectivity of Pune’s eastern corridors but also for enhancing overall traffic management in the region.
