Pimpri: A gang of 7-8 people attacked a goon with a sharp weapon in the Ravet area on Monday (July 1) night. The injured history-sheeter died during treatment at a hospital in Thergaon.
The victim has been identified as Amol alias Dhanjya Gajanan Gorgale (34), a resident of Punawale Gaothan. The police detained former BJP corporator Shekhar Ovhal. An accomplice of the deceased was also injured in the attack.
Shekhar Ashok Ovhal, Munna alias Abhishek Ovhal, Samir Shaikh, Mahesh Kadam, Ganesh Kadam and three unidentified persons have been booked. The attack was a result of a fight during the Chinchwad assembly bypoll.
According to the police, the gang attacked Gorgale, who was caught off-guard behind Samadhan restaurant in Punawale on Monday night. He was assaulted with a sharp weapon. Seriously injured Gorgale was rushed to a hospital in Thergaon. But he died during treatment, said the police.
It came to light that former BJP corporator Shekhar Ovhal was involved in the murder. The Ravet Police detained him.
The police said that Gorgale and Ovhal had fought during the Chinchwad Assembly bypoll. Ovhal was earlier in the NCP. He entered the BJP before the Chinchwad bye election. Gorgale was booked and arrested for a murder conspiracy of Ovhal. He was freed from jail three months ago. The Pimpri Chinchwad Police are searching for the other absconding accused.
