No macOS Welcome for Counter-Strike 2: Valve’s macOS Standoff”

The highly anticipated launch of Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) was met with enthusiasm and excitement, captivating gamers worldwide. However, one notable absence raised eyebrows among the gaming community: the absence of CS2 on the macOS platform. Many had anticipated the arrival of this beloved franchise on Apple’s systems, but Valve has confirmed that Counter-Strike 2 will not make its way to macOS-operated personal computers. In this article, we delve into the reasons behind this decision and explore how you can still enjoy CS:GO on macOS through an alternative version.

Why Counter-Strike 2 Is Not Coming to macOS

Valve has shed light on the absence of Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) on macOS through a Steam support FAQ page. According to Valve, CS2 represents the “largest technical leap” in the franchise’s history, demanding enhanced system specifications and consequently becoming more resource-intensive than its predecessor, CS:GO. A pivotal factor contributing to this decision is the relatively small player base that utilizes macOS for CS:GO, comprising just 1% of the active user community. As a result, Valve has officially discontinued macOS support, making it clear that Counter-Strike 2 will not be available on the macOS platform.

Furthermore, Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) is designed exclusively for 64-bit Windows and Linux operating systems. Systems with graphics cards supporting the DirectX 9 API and 32-bit Windows are not compatible with CS2. While CS2 can run smoothly on GPUs that support newer DirectX APIs, the requirement for improved hardware specifications is a contributing factor to macOS exclusion. Although a workaround to play CS2 on Macs via Windows might emerge in the future, it remains an impossibility at present.

Refunds for Prime Status Upgrade

Valve has taken steps to accommodate players who have purchased a Prime Status Upgrade for CS:GO or CS2. Eligible players who obtained Prime Status between the CS2 beta release on March 22, 2023, and the official CS2 launch on September 27, 2023, can apply for a refund of the $14.99 Prime Status Upgrade. However, it’s important to note that gifts, CD keys, and banned accounts are not eligible for refunds.

CS:GO Legacy Version: An Alternative for Mac Users

While CS2 may not be available on macOS, there is an alternative for fans of the franchise. CS:GO, the earlier Counter-Strike game, may no longer be accessible through the Steam Store, but players can still install the CS:GO legacy version. To do so, navigate to the Properties for Counter-Strike 2 in your Steam Library, select “Betas,” and choose “csgo_legacy” from the dropdown menu. The CS:GO legacy version will begin downloading, allowing you to enjoy the older version based on Source 1.

This legacy version can be played on macOS, Windows, and Linux. However, Valve has announced that after January 1, 2024, the CS:GO legacy version will no longer receive support, including dedicated matchmaking. Players looking to access their CS:GO inventory items must transition to CS2, which carries over previous items to the Source 2 engine.

The Future of Counter-Strike on macOS

Valve’s decision not to release CS2 on macOS has sparked varied reactions. While the macOS platform may have had a smaller player base, many still wish that Valve had invested in macOS support, especially given the capabilities of Apple’s powerful ARM-based M-series chips. The development of games for these chips would require effort and commitment from game developers. What are your thoughts on the absence of Counter-Strike 2 on macOS?
