NFDC-NFAI Pays Tribute to Director John Abraham with Special Screening of “Amma Ariyan”

In a touching tribute to the renowned director John Abraham, the NFDC-National Film Archives of India (NFAI) is organizing a special screening of “Amma Ariyan” (Malayalam, 1986), a film that holds the distinction of being the only South Indian Feature Film to secure a coveted spot in the “Top 10 Indian Films” of all time list by the British Film Institute.

The screening is scheduled to take place at NFDC-NFAI on Law College Road, Pune, on Saturday, September 9th, starting at 6 pm. This remarkable film has undergone meticulous digital restoration under the care of NFDC-NFAI.

John Abraham, a prolific figure in Malayalam and Tamil cinema, was an alumnus of Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), where he graduated with honors in screenwriting and film direction. In addition to the screening of “Amma Ariyan,” the tribute will also feature three short films directed by him during his time at FTII: “Koyna Nagar” (1967), “Priya” (1969), and “Hides and Strings” (1969). Admission to all these screenings will be free of charge, and English subtitles will be provided.

“Amma Ariyan” delves into a young man’s contemplations on life, despair, and survival, conveyed through poignant letters penned to his mother. “Koyna Nagar” narrates the story of the devastating earthquake that shook Koyna on December 11, 1967. “Hides and Strings” offers a glimpse into the world of musical instrument makers in Pune, while “Priya” explores the daily life of a young woman named Priya.

This tribute serves as a fitting homage to John Abraham’s exceptional contributions to Indian cinema and celebrates his enduring legacy. The NFDC-NFAI extends an invitation to all cinephiles and enthusiasts to join this special event, commemorating the brilliance of a director whose impact continues to resonate through the art of filmmaking.
