MS Swaminathan: A Visionary in Agriculture, a Legend in Indian Farming

Renowned agricultural scientist and the Father of India’s historic ‘Green Revolution,’ Professor MS Swaminathan, passed away today at his residence in Chennai at the age of 98. The celebrated agricultural icon had been receiving treatment for an age-related illness for an extended period, according to sources at the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation.

Swaminathan’s daughter, Soumya Swaminathan, who is also the former Deputy Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), confirmed his peaceful passing. She noted that her father remained committed to the welfare of farmers and the upliftment of the underprivileged until the end of his life.

One of Professor Swaminathan’s enduring contributions was his recognition of the pivotal role of women in Indian agriculture. He initiated various programs, including the Mahila Sashaktikaran Yojana, aimed at empowering women in the country’s farming sector. His vision also led to the introduction of a chapter on gender and the environment during his tenure at the Sixth Planning Commission.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Twitter, highlighting Swaminathan’s groundbreaking work in agriculture that transformed the lives of millions and ensured food security for the nation.

Former President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu, also paid tribute to the pioneering agricultural scientist on Twitter, reminiscing about their close association and numerous interactions.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari acknowledged Swaminathan’s lifelong dedication to advancing agriculture and improving food security, leaving an indelible mark on the nation.

MS Swaminathan is survived by three daughters. His contributions to agriculture, particularly the Green Revolution, have left an enduring legacy that continues to shape India’s agricultural landscape and ensure food sustainability for generations to come.
