Mahindra’s Electric SUV Journey: Unveiling Upcoming Models, Powertrains, and Collaborations

In a recent revelation at its Futurescape event in Cape Town, South Africa, Mahindra & Mahindra showcased its commitment to the electric vehicle (EV) landscape with the unveiling of the Thar.e, Global Pik Up concepts, and the OJA tractor range. Going beyond these unveilings, the company announced the launch timelines, powertrains, and unique collaborations for its four upcoming electric SUVs – XUV.e8, XUV.e9, BE.05, and BE.07.

The Launch Timeline and Features

The event not only marked the reveal of these models but also introduced the new logo that will grace Mahindra’s upcoming range of electric SUVs. The eagerly anticipated XUV.e8, based on the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) version of the Mahindra XUV700, is slated for launch in December 2024. Following suit, the XUV.e9 is set to launch in April 2025, sharing both interior and powertrain attributes with its predecessor.

In the latter half of this timeline, the electric coupe SUV, BE.05, part of Mahindra’s Born Electric SUV range, is scheduled for an October 2025 debut. Subsequently, the BE.07 is poised to make its entrance in April 2026.

Revolutionizing Powertrains and Batteries

Mahindra’s electric SUVs are underpinned by the innovative INGLO platform. The vehicles will feature various powertrains, and during the event, Mahindra detailed the specifications of the electric motors.

The XUV.e will harness a motor from Valeo, generating 170 kW (231 hp) power and 380 Nm torque. Meanwhile, the BE.05 and BE.07 electric SUVs will utilize front and rear-mounted motors. The front axle-mounted motor is designed to deliver 80 kW (109 hp) power and 135 Nm torque. On the other hand, the rear axle-mounted motor is a powerhouse, generating 210 kW (286 hp) power and a whopping 535 Nm torque.

In terms of battery technology, Mahindra showcased a 79 kWh battery pack using Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells. This advanced battery can be charged from 0-80% in a remarkable 39 minutes, offering a promising prospect for faster and more convenient EV charging.

Innovative Sonic Identity and Collaboration

In an exciting development, Mahindra Electric Automobiles Ltd. (MEAL), a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra, partnered with Indian music composer A R Rahman to create a unique sonic identity for its forthcoming electric vehicles. This sonic identity comprises over 75 distinctive sounds crafted for Mahindra’s upcoming global electric SUVs. These sounds encompass interior and exterior drive sounds, infotainment cues, experience zone modes, and functional signals like seat-belt alerts and turn indicators.

Each sound has been meticulously designed to align with Mahindra’s brand ethos and forge a connection with customers through music and lifestyle. The development of these sonic compositions was informed by Rahman’s experience at Mahindra’s testing facility in Kanchipuram.

Furthermore, Dolby Atmos will be integrated into the driving experience, with a 360-degree surround sound solution from HARMAN. The upcoming electric SUVs will be adorned with an array of soundscapes, complemented by visual enhancements like active ambient lighting and high-resolution animations.
