IMD Issues Red Alert for Heavy Rains in Himachal Pradesh; Schools and Colleges Closed

Pune Rains

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the state of Himachal Pradesh, warning of heavy rains and potential disruptions. The weather forecast predicts moderate to heavy rainfall in several districts of the state, with the possibility of landslides and flash floods. As a precautionary measure, the Himachal Pradesh government has decided to close all private and government schools and colleges on August 14.

Red Alert and Rainfall Predictions

The IMD has issued a red alert for Himachal Pradesh on Monday, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions. The forecast suggests that moderate rainfall is expected in 13 districts, including Shimla, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kullu, Chamba, Mandi, Kangra, Sirmaur, Una, Kinnaur, Solan, Lahaul, and Spiti. Additionally, heavy rainfall is anticipated in three areas.

The weather office also predicts the possibility of very heavy rain showers in several places and extremely heavy rainfall in specific regions such as Beas, Ranjit Sagar, and the Pong Dam catchment area.

Safety Measures and School Closures

Considering the continuous rain showers and the potential risks associated with heavy rains, the Himachal Pradesh government has taken precautionary steps to ensure the safety of students. Accordingly, all private and government schools and colleges in the state will remain closed on August 14. This decision aims to prevent any risks to students due to inclement weather conditions.

Moreover, the Department of Education in Himachal Pradesh has announced the cancellation of ongoing examinations for Post Graduate classes, including B.Ed exams scheduled for August 14. This cancellation is attributed to the incessant rains and unfavorable weather conditions prevailing in the state.

Impact of Heavy Rains

The heavy rain showers in Himachal Pradesh have resulted in landslides and rockslides in various areas, causing blockages on key roads. Some of the major highways, including National Highway-05, National Highway-205, and National Highway-907A, have been obstructed due to the heavy downpour. While efforts have been made to open roads for traffic, only limited movement has been allowed on certain routes due to safety concerns.

The state has witnessed a significant number of landslides and flash floods, leading to the loss of lives and property. The police department has issued advisories to the public, urging them to avoid unnecessary travel, especially during the night, in areas prone to landslides and rockslides.

As Himachal Pradesh continues to grapple with monsoon-related challenges, authorities are focused on ensuring the safety of citizens and minimizing risks associated with adverse weather conditions.
