As the festive season unfolds and the streets reverberate with the post-Diwali bustle, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) is gearing up for a comprehensive crackdown on tax evaders. The focus will be on overdue vehicles, coupled with Pollution Under Control (PUC) checks and fitness assessments to address the escalating pollution levels in the city.
Rising Vehicle Numbers and Tax Evasion Concerns
The city of Pune has witnessed a remarkable surge in vehicle numbers, spanning bikes, cars, cargo, passenger trucks, and buses. The festive period, especially during Dussehra and Diwali, sees a substantial uptick in vehicle purchases, exacerbating the congestion on city roads. Surprisingly, this year’s Dussehra-Diwali window saw a staggering 20 thousand vehicles being purchased in just twenty days, including a noteworthy rise in e-bike acquisitions.
However, amidst the vehicular boom, tax evasion has become a growing concern. Cargo vehicles, in particular, are mandated to fulfill tax obligations after a specified period from the date of purchase. Additionally, vehicles approaching the end of their operational life must undergo fitness assessments and settle outstanding taxes for further RTO permissions. Unfortunately, many vehicle owners in Pune are operating without adhering to these tax obligations.
RTO’s Vigilant Response
Sanjeev Bhor, Pune Regional Transport Officer, has affirmed the RTO’s commitment to address this issue head-on. “Special teams have been designated for inspections and action against vehicles with tax arrears. Following Diwali, a comprehensive inspection drive is scheduled to scrutinize all vehicles in the work area,” stated Bhor.
The RTO’s proactive approach aims to curb tax evasion, promote road safety, and contribute to environmental conservation by ensuring compliance with PUC regulations. Vehicle owners are urged to fulfill their tax obligations promptly to avoid legal repercussions.
