Beware the Trap: Pune Residents Fall Prey to Rs 19 Crore ‘Online Task’ Scams

Online Fraud

The surge in ‘online task’ scams has unleashed a wave of financial distress among Pune residents, as cybercriminals exploit their quest for quick earnings. These scams typically begin with enticing WhatsApp messages, inviting victims to join Telegram groups promising ‘Work from Home’ opportunities. The scammers dangle the lure of monetary rewards for performing seemingly straightforward tasks, such as liking YouTube videos and providing screenshots as proof.

One victim recounted her ordeal, stating that after following initial instructions and completing a few tasks, she unexpectedly received a deposit of two to three thousand rupees in her bank account. However, the scammers rapidly shifted tactics, pressuring her to invest money in exchange for more lucrative paid tasks. Succumbing to greed, she complied with their demands.

Subsequently, the scammers concocted technical glitches as an excuse for the promised earnings not materializing. To rectify the situation, they duped her into investing an additional Rs 2.5 lakh. Tragically, she soon realized that her entire investment had vanished, and the promised returns were nothing but a cruel mirage.

The Pune Cyber Crime Branch has raised an alarming red flag regarding the proliferation of ‘online task’ scams. In the last eight months alone, they’ve received 187 complaints from distressed citizens. Shockingly, these victims collectively suffered losses amounting to a staggering Rs 19 crores.

While Pune has seen its fair share of online scams, including fraudulent links related to overdue ‘MSEB’ bills and ‘sextortion’ blackmail schemes, the ‘online task’ scam has now taken center stage. These schemes zero in on victims by dangling monetary incentives for simple tasks like liking YouTube videos or posting company reviews on Google. Notably, these scams often target educated individuals who may be more susceptible to the allure of easy money.

Despite the growing number of victims, not all affected individuals come forward to file formal complaints. Some cases are under investigation, while others are in the process of being registered as criminal cases.

Local law enforcement has issued a stern warning to citizens, urging them to exercise extreme caution when encountering online offers and to adopt preventive measures against falling prey to fraud.
