Armed and Ready: Pune’s ‘Damini Squads’ Equipped with Pistols to Combat Crime

In response to a recent attack on a young college girl in Sadashiv Peth, Pune, authorities have taken proactive measures to enhance the city’s security by increasing the number of ‘Damini squads.’ These squads, consisting of women police officers, will now be equipped with pistols to effectively combat crime. Pistol training has also commenced for officers in the crime branch, investigation squads, and other patrolling teams.

The women police personnel serving in the Damini squads will be provided with pistols to augment their capabilities in maintaining law and order. Police Commissioner Retesh Kumaarr has directed swift action in the event of any untoward incidents. While all members of the police force receive basic pistol and gun training, officers trained in pistol handling often lack regular practice. Typically, pistol handling is practiced only once a year by police personnel.

In light of the increasing crime incidents, the Damini squads, in collaboration with the crime branch and the detection branch (DB) of police stations, have initiated pistol training. Commissioner of Police Retesh Kumaarr and Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Karnik have issued orders to promptly respond to acts of vehicle vandalism, intimidation, and incidents of molestation against women. A comprehensive list of known criminals in the city has been compiled, accompanied by instructions to take preemptive action against them.

The presence of armed police officers instills fear in criminals and generates a sense of security among citizens. Recognizing this, the Commissioner of Police has mandated pistol training for women police personnel in the Damini squads and investigation teams. Additionally, pistols will also be made available to police officers serving in the investigation teams to bolster their crime-fighting capabilities.

These measures signify the commitment of Pune’s law enforcement agencies to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens. By equipping the Damini squads and investigation teams with pistols, authorities aim to create a deterrent effect and swiftly respond to any criminal activities. The initiative also serves to empower women police personnel, enabling them to tackle challenging situations effectively.

It is crucial for the police force to receive regular training and practice in pistol handling to maintain their proficiency and readiness. Ongoing training programs and regular exercises will contribute to enhancing the overall effectiveness of law enforcement in Pune.

The decision to equip the Damini squads and investigation teams with pistols demonstrates a proactive approach to combating crime and ensuring public safety. It is an important step towards creating a secure environment for the residents of Pune. By leveraging the capabilities of trained and armed officers, the police department can effectively address criminal activities and maintain law and order in the city.

The people of Pune can take solace in the fact that the authorities are actively working towards bolstering security measures and responding swiftly to incidents. The introduction of armed Damini squads and equipped investigation teams will undoubtedly serve as a deterrent to criminals and contribute to a safer city for everyone.
