Adipurush Controversy: Petition Filed Against the Film in Delhi High Court

New Delhi, June 16, 2023: The release of the highly anticipated mythological epic film, ‘Adipurush,’ has been met with significant controversy. A petition filed in the Delhi High Court against the film argues for a ban due to allegations of disrespect towards Lord Rama. Additionally, the film has been halted from its release in Nepal.

Criticism surrounding Adipurush has been mounting since the release of the final trailer, leading to protests from the Hindu Sena, who claim that the film mocks Lord Rama. Vishnu Gupta, the National President of the Hindu Sena, is seeking a court directive to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to deny the film a certificate.

The petition argues that the portrayal of Lord Rama in the film differs from the depiction in the revered Hindu scriptures, the Ramayana, written by Maharishi Valmiki and Sant Tulsidas.

Furthermore, the petition claims that the roles of Ravana, played by Saif Ali Khan, and Hanuman do not align with the core principles of Indian culture. Ravana, traditionally depicted as a Brahmin, is portrayed in a manner that is considered insulting and offensive, particularly due to his terrifying visage with a beard.

Certain dialogues in the film have also stirred controversy, not only in India but also in Nepal. Lines such as ‘Tere jali na?’ (Didn’t you burn?) and ‘Tel tere baap ka, aag tere baap ki…’ have raised concerns.

In Nepal, critics have rejected the reference to Sita as the ‘daughter of India,’ as her birthplace is traditionally believed to be in Janakpur, present-day Nepal.

Despite being one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, with a substantial budget in the Indian film industry, Adipurush has faced criticism and rejections from various quarters. The controversy surrounding the film has ignited a debate about the portrayal of religious figures and cultural sensitivity in cinematic productions.
