The Sit and Rise Test (SRT) has become a trending method for estimating future life duration. Studied extensively by the European Society of Cardiology since 2002, this two-minute examination requires only yourself and a bit of floor space.

The objective is to sit down cross-legged and rise back up barefoot without utilizing your hands or arms for assistance. The best results involve using only your legs and core, making it a straightforward yet revealing test.

Initially starting with ten points, participants lose points for employing any aids while sitting down or standing up, such as their hands, knees, forearms, or even using the side of their leg. The original research, based on over 2,000 adults, showed that those with lower scores were more likely to pass away within the study’s 6.3-year span.

Understanding the Scores: A Glimpse into Mortality Risk

Participants scoring between 0 and 3 were up to six times more likely to pass away, emphasizing the correlation between test performance and mortality risk. A score below eight indicated a two to five times higher risk of passing away within the next six years. Intriguingly, the study revealed that for every one-point increase in the score, mortality decreased by 21%.

The research team suggested that the test might reflect an individual’s capacity to perform various daily activities successfully, such as bending over to pick up items from the floor. It’s worth noting that the test is primarily intended for individuals between 50 and 80 years old. For this age group, maintaining muscle strength becomes crucial to prevent falls, which pose a substantial risk of injury and mortality.
