In a notable endorsement of the 70-hour work week advocated by Infosys founder Narayan Murthy, his wife, Sudha Murthy, has expressed her support for the idea, citing her own example. The Murthy couple, in an interview with India Today, addressed the ongoing debate surrounding the 70-hour workweek, with Sudha Murthy highlighting the importance of enjoying one’s work.
“My definition is you should enjoy your work. You should be passionate about your work. The work is a holiday then,” affirmed Sudha Murthy during the interview.
Narayan Murthy, reiterating his stance on the matter, emphasized the responsibility of those who have benefitted from the country to work hard for the betterment of society.
“My view has always been that those of us staying in India who have received so much from the country, from the taxpayers, have the enormous responsibility to work very, very hard to bring a chance for the betterment of the lives of poorer sections of society. Therefore, I don’t regret saying that a 70-hour work culture should be the norm,” stated Narayan Murthy in the interview.
The discussion on the balance between work and personal life was initially sparked by Narayan Murthy when he advocated for dedicating more than 70 hours per week to work. Despite facing scrutiny, he maintained his viewpoint, emphasizing the need for young professionals to invest additional hours for the country’s betterment.
In a podcast conversation with former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai, Murthy underscored India’s comparatively low work productivity on a global scale, supporting his argument for longer work hours.
