Remembering Major Shaitan Singh Bhati: The Hero of Rezang La

In the challenging landscape of Rezang La, at an altitude of 17,000 feet, Major Shaitan Singh displayed unwavering courage and leadership during the Sino-Indian War in 1962. Despite overwhelming odds, his exceptional bravery and sacrifice became a symbol of inspiration for generations to come.

Born on December 1, 1924, in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, to a military family, Major Shaitan Singh was commissioned into the Kumaon Regiment on August 1, 1949. His moment to shine came during the Indo-China war in 1962, where he led the ‘C’ Company of the 13th Kumaon battalion at the crucial Rezang La post.

The Battle of Rezang La: November 18, 1962

Situated in Ladakh’s Chushul sector, Rezang La stood at an imposing 5,000 meters. Isolated from the rest of the battalion due to its mountainous terrain, the company anticipated a Chinese attack on November 18. Despite the treacherous weather and unfavorable terrain, Major Shaitan Singh’s company valiantly defended their positions against the advancing Chinese forces.

Facing the challenges of cold winds and lack of artillery cover, the Indian soldiers fought with rifles, light machine guns, grenades, and mortars. The Chinese suffered heavy casualties as the platoons, led by Major Shaitan Singh, held their ground.

Exemplary Leadership Amidst Adversity

Maj Shaitan Singh moved from one platoon post to another, sustaining the morale of his troops. Even after being gravely wounded by a Chinese MMG, he continued to lead and encourage his men. As the Chinese engaged in a rear attack with intense machine gun fire and heavy artillery, Major Shaitan Singh displayed unparalleled bravery.

While two comrades attempted to evacuate him, Major Singh, concerned for their safety, ordered them to leave him behind. He was found behind a boulder, still gripping his weapon, after three months in the snow-clad region. His supreme courage, leadership, and devotion to duty earned him the Param Vir Chakra, the highest wartime gallantry medal.

Legacy of Major Shaitan Singh

The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd (SCI) honored Major Shaitan Singh by naming fifteen Crude Oil Tankers after Param Vir Chakra recipients, including the vessel MT “Major Shaitan Singh, PVC.” The memorial at Rezang La aptly captures the essence of his sacrifice: “How can a man die better than facing fearful odds. For the ashes of his fathers and the temple of his Gods.”

On the anniversary of Major Shaitan Singh’s birth, we pay tribute to his indomitable spirit and the legacy he left behind. His heroism continues to inspire and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by our brave soldiers.
