PMPML Initiates Free Bus Passes for School Students, Easing Commuting Concerns

Pune, June 14, 2023: In a welcome move for students and their families, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has announced that it will provide free bus passes to students from 5th to 12th grade attending Pune Municipal Corporation schools. With the academic year set to commence shortly, this decision comes as a timely boon, alleviating the commuting challenges faced by these students.

Under the new scheme, students from 5th to 10th grade can now travel on PMPML buses free of charge, while students from private schools will be required to pay only 25% of the regular fare. The rationale behind this decision is to encourage students to utilize public transportation, ultimately reducing the number of private vehicles on the roads and alleviating traffic congestion around schools.

Despite PMPML running special buses on various routes for students, many students still resort to private vehicles, rickshaws, private vans, or school buses for their daily commute. These additional vehicles contribute to traffic congestion, particularly during the busy school drop-off and pick-up times.

To avail the benefits of the free pass, students need to follow a simple process. Application forms can be obtained from all PMPML bus depots and pass centers starting from Monday. Students can fill out the forms and submit them at any PMPML depot. Additionally, schools have the option to collect empty forms on behalf of their students and deposit the completed forms in bulk at the nearest PMPML bus depot.

To streamline the process and minimize inconvenience, students will not have to travel long distances to bus depots or pass centers. For students from private schools, the process involves filling out the form, having it scrutinized, and verifying the necessary documents. A challan will then be issued, and the bus fare fee can be paid at any branch of the Bank of Maharashtra within the Pune Municipal Corporation limits. Students must subsequently submit their completed forms, along with the required documents and a copy of the challan, to the designated PMPML bus depot or pass center.

This commendable initiative has been launched ahead of the school reopening this year, ensuring that students can immediately take advantage of this convenient service. Students studying in areas well-served by PMPML buses are set to benefit greatly from this scheme, enjoying a hassle-free and cost-effective mode of transportation to and from school.

The PMPML’s decision to provide free bus passes to school students showcases its commitment to supporting education and fostering sustainable transportation practices. As students embark on their academic journey, this initiative will undoubtedly contribute to their overall well-being and help create a greener and more efficient transportation system in Pune.
