From Corporate to Cotton: The Remarkable Journey of Taniya Biswas, Founder of Suta Sarees

In the realm of entrepreneurial success stories, Taniya Biswas stands out as a trailblazer who dared to trade the stability of a high-paying job for the vibrant unpredictability of entrepreneurship. Together with her sister Sujata Biswas, Taniya embarked on a journey that would not only redefine their lives but also create waves in the saree industry.

In 2016, armed with a vision and a joint investment of Rs 6 lakhs, the Biswas sisters launched Suta, a saree brand that has since evolved into a symbol of elegance and empowerment. Taniya Biswas, a graduate from the prestigious National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, and an MBA from IIM Lucknow, had a flourishing career at IBM as an associate consultant. However, the call of entrepreneurship beckoned, and in May 2016, Taniya decided to leave the security of her corporate role to pursue her passion.

Their journey wasn’t without its share of trials. Before delving into the saree business, the Biswas sisters experimented with various ventures, including a pancake chain that lasted only two months. Undeterred by initial setbacks, they persisted, trying their hand at a photography page and designing innovative clothing, such as dresses with pockets and loose pants.

The turning point came in 2016 when they decided to focus on sarees made from soft mulmul cotton. Their dedication and entrepreneurial spirit fueled the growth of Suta, turning a modest initial investment of Rs 6 lakhs into a thriving business valued at Rs 50 crore as of 2022.

What sets Suta apart is not just the exquisite sarees it offers but the impact it has had on employment. The company, under Taniya Biswas’s leadership, now employs over 17,000 people, becoming a source of livelihood and empowerment for many.

Taniya’s story is a testament to the possibilities that unfold when passion meets purpose. From corporate corridors to the vibrant world of sarees, her journey inspires aspiring entrepreneurs to follow their dreams, embrace challenges, and create meaningful change.
