Birsa Munda Birth Anniversary: Commemorating Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas

November 15th annually resonates with cultural significance as it marks the celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas or Tribal Pride Day, dedicated to honoring the birth anniversary of the revered tribal freedom fighter, Birsa Munda. Born in 1875, Birsa Munda’s indomitable spirit and leadership played a pivotal role in the fight against British colonial rule and conversion activities in what is now Jharkhand.

PM Modi’s Historic Initiative: ‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra’

To commemorate this historic day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch the ‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra’ from Ulihatu village in Jharkhand, making him the first sitting Prime Minister to visit the birthplace of this tribal icon. The yatra, spanning all districts across the country by January 25, is a testament to the commitment to tribal empowerment and acknowledging the significant role of leaders like Birsa Munda.

Birsa Munda: A Revolutionary Leader

Birsa Munda’s impactful slogan, ‘Abua Raj Ete Jana, Maharani Raj Tundu Jana,’ became a rallying cry for tribal empowerment. Despite his youth, Birsa Munda’s dedication earned him the title of ‘Bhagwan’ or Lord. Tragically, he passed away at the age of 25 in British custody at the Ranchi jail, leaving a lasting legacy in the fight for tribal rights.

Recognizing the Visionary Leader: Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas

The Union Cabinet, acknowledging Birsa Munda’s immense contributions, declared November 15 as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’ on November 10, 2021. This annual celebration pays homage to the visionary leader’s role in India’s freedom movement. In the same year, PM Modi inaugurated a museum in Ranchi dedicated to Birsa Munda, emphasizing the importance of celebrating the rich tribal culture and its contributions to national development.

Celebrating Tribal Culture: Museum and Memorial Park

The museum, located at the Old Central Jail in Ranchi, features a 25-feet tall statue of Birsa Munda and showcases the contributions of other tribal freedom fighters. Adjacent to the museum is a 25-acre memorial park, a collaborative project between the Centre and the Jharkhand Government, standing as a tribute to the indomitable spirit and legacy of Birsa Munda and his fellow tribal freedom fighters. The park includes a musical fountain, food court, children’s park, infinity pool, garden, and other entertainment facilities.
