We’re about to unveil an exciting option for your next road trip – a journey to our neighboring country, Myanmar, via road. Myanmar, a land of stunning beauty and rich history, is now more accessible than ever through road travel. Read on to discover all you need to know for this thrilling expedition.

1. Indo-Myanmar Border Crossing Agreement:

On May 11, 2018, a significant milestone was achieved as India and Myanmar signed the Indo-Myanmar Border crossing agreement, opening doors to new avenues of exploration. Myanmar shares its border with four Indian states – Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland. However, there are two international entry-exit checkpoints, as per the agreement. The first is located in the twin towns of Moreh and Tamu in Manipur, and the other in Rihkhawdar, Zowkhawtar in Mizoram. These checkpoints are open to normal tourists and visitors with valid passports and visas, making road travel a reality.

2. Ideal Exit Point:

If you’re pondering the ideal exit point from India, Manipur stands out as a preferable choice. The distance between Imphal Airport in Manipur and the Moreh Border is approximately 3.5 hours, making it a convenient and time-saving option. In contrast, the alternative exit point in Mizoram requires a more extended journey, with the nearest airport, Lengpui, situated approximately 10 hours away at a distance of around 242 km.

3. Driving Your Car to Myanmar:

The road to Myanmar is open for adventure-seekers who wish to explore it by car. However, there are a few prerequisites to fulfill. Ensure you possess a Carnet De Pass and an International Driving License (IDP). These documents can be obtained through the Regional Transport Authority Office at a nominal cost. To secure a Carnet De Pass, you’ll need to provide a security deposit.

4. Obtaining a Myanmar Visa:

Acquiring a visa for Myanmar is a straightforward process if you’re well-prepared. To streamline your travel, consider opting for an electronic visa, which may necessitate a visit to the embassy for paperwork. It’s advisable to keep two copies of your e-visa for emergency situations, ensuring a hassle-free journey.

5. Timing Your Journey:

The best time to embark on your road trip to Myanmar is during the dry season, spanning from October to May. This period offers ideal weather conditions and ensures a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience.

With these key details in mind, you’re well-equipped to hit the road and embark on an unforgettable journey to the captivating landscapes and rich culture of Myanmar.
