Planning for Lakshadweep? Read this before you plan a trip there

Lakshadweep, the enchanting archipelago in the Arabian Sea, is a dream destination for those seeking pristine beaches and vibrant marine life. However, before you embark on your journey to this tropical paradise, it’s crucial to understand the regulations and intricacies that govern travel to this protected area. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you plan your trip responsibly and make the most of your time in Lakshadweep.

Protected Area Permit (PAP):

Application Process:

If you are considering a trip to Lakshadweep, you’ll need to obtain a Protected Area Permit (PAP). The application process is straightforward and can be completed online through the e-permit portal of the Lakshadweep Administration http://lakshadweeptourism.com/contact.html. The application requires basic information such as your name, address, purpose of visit, travel dates, and the chosen islands. Scanned copies of your ID proof and a passport-sized photograph should also be uploaded. The processing time is typically 7 working days, and you will receive an email notification with the permit status.

Validity and Fees:

The PAP is valid for 30 days from the date of issue, and the permit fee is INR 300 per person for all ages.

Details:

When applying for the PAP, you can choose the specific islands you want to visit. It’s important to carry a printed copy of the approved PAP along with your valid ID proof while traveling. Certain islands may require additional permits for specific activities like scuba diving or wildlife photography, so it’s advisable to check with the respective island authorities for details.

Transportation:

For travelers heading to Lakshadweep, flights from Delhi to Kochi cost around INR 12,000 (round trip). Inter-island ferry transfers range from INR 4,000 to 8,000 per person for a two-way journey.

Accommodation:

  • Budget: Agatti Island offers guesthouses at INR 1,500-2,500 per night.
  • Moderate: Bangaram Island provides cottages at INR 15,000 per night (all-inclusive).
  • Luxury: Kavaratti boasts air-conditioned suites for INR 9,000 per night (all-inclusive).

Water Activities:

Lakshadweep offers a plethora of water activities, including canoeing at Minicoy Island, snorkeling starting at INR 1,000, scuba diving at INR 3,500, and fishing tours at INR 1,000. Island tours are also available at around ₹1,000-1,500 per person.

More Activities:

Apart from water activities, visitors can explore local villages, witness traditional boat building, enjoy Maldivian dance performances, and indulge in Ayurvedic massages and spa treatments for ultimate relaxation.

Permits and Taxes:

A mandatory ₹300 entry permit is required for non-Indians, and a Green Tax of ₹300 per person is levied upon arrival at Agatti airport.

Best Time to Visit:

October to February is considered the best time to travel to Lakshadweep when the humidity is not too high, and the weather is pleasantly mild.

Extra Tips:

  • Carry enough cash, as ATMs and credit card facilities are limited on some islands.
  • Learn basic Malayalam to facilitate communication with locals.
  • Minimize plastic waste, avoid littering, and be respectful of the fragile marine ecosystem. Consider participating in beach clean-up initiatives if possible.
