Lakshadweep Administration Revolutionizes Travel with Seamless E-Permit System

In a groundbreaking move, the Lakshadweep administration has undertaken significant measures to simplify and enhance the travel experience for visitors to the archipelago. The traditional e-permit requirement, once a manual process involving bank visits and paperwork, has now transitioned to a fully online system, streamlining the permit application process and expediting approvals within a day or two.

The new digital approach eliminates the need for travelers, including Indian citizens, to physically visit banks and pay a fee of Rs 200 for entry permits. This reform is expected to boost tourism and facilitate smoother entry for those wishing to explore the picturesque Lakshadweep islands.

The surge in demand for air travel to Lakshadweep is evident, with Alliance Air, the primary Indian airline serving the archipelago, reporting complete sell-outs for its Kochi-Agatti-Kochi flights until March. Recognizing the need for increased air connectivity, the airline is currently considering additional flights to accommodate the rising interest in visiting Lakshadweep.

Giri Sankar, Lakshadweep’s Additional District Magistrate, shared insights into the region’s ambitious plans for airport infrastructure development. The proposal includes the expansion of the Agatti airport runway and the construction of a new greenfield airport at Minicoy, catering to larger aircraft like A320/B737. The expansion projects aim to enhance connectivity and accommodate higher passenger capacities.

Moreover, Lakshadweep is actively investing in tourism development initiatives. Bangaram, a premium island resort, has doubled its capacity with the addition of 32 premium rooms. The archipelago is witnessing the construction of premium resorts with modern amenities on Suheli and Kamat Islands. Additionally, new tent cities are being established on Agatti and Kavaratti Islands, contributing to a more robust and enjoyable tourism infrastructure.

As Lakshadweep embraces digital transformation and invests in tourism expansion, the archipelago is poised to become an even more enticing destination for travelers seeking a unique and immersive experience.
