In a bid to protect the delicate ecosystem surrounding Vasota Fort, a popular tourist destination in Satara district, the Maharashtra forest department has announced the temporary closure of tourism activities for three days. From December 30 (Saturday) to January 1 (Monday), entry to Vasota Fort, situated in the Koyna Sanctuary and Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, will be restricted to mitigate the impact of the increased tourist influx on the area’s natural resources.
Known for its scenic beauty and historical significance, Vasota Fort attracts trekkers, fort enthusiasts, and nature lovers from across the region. However, the fort’s location within the core area of the wildlife department has led to a surge in tourist footfall, prompting concerns about the potential environmental impact.
The decision to close tourism for a brief period aims to safeguard the biodiversity of the region, allowing the natural habitat to recover and preventing any harm to the fort and its surroundings. During holidays, such as New Year’s Eve, Vasota Fort experiences a notable increase in visitors, making this temporary closure particularly crucial.
Boating clubs that facilitate the transportation of tourists from Koyna Reservoir to Vasota Fort have also been instructed to adhere to the temporary ban. The forest department has issued a stern warning, stating that legal action will be taken against individuals found in the Vasota Fort area during the specified three-day closure.
This proactive measure underscores the commitment to balancing tourism and ecological conservation, ensuring that the beauty and integrity of Vasota Fort’s natural surroundings are preserved for future generations.
