YouTube Tests AI-generated Summary Feature to Enhance Content Selection

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a prominent tool in various industries, and now social media platforms are also harnessing its potential. YouTube, one of the leading players in the space, has recently introduced a new AI feature as part of a beta test. This feature provides auto-generated summaries to users, aiming to help them select the most engaging videos by offering concise overviews.

Unlike the standard video descriptions created by content creators, the AI-generated summaries serve a different purpose. They don’t focus on reducing the duration of lengthy videos; instead, they aim to give users a glimpse of the video’s essence in a summarized format. These summaries are visible on both watch and search pages, assisting users in quickly determining whether a video aligns with their interests.

It’s important to note that this beta feature won’t replace the existing video descriptions curated by content creators. Instead, it will act as an alternative tool, enhancing the user experience by providing a quick preview of the video content.

YouTube joins other social media platforms in leveraging AI technology to improve user experiences and content moderation. For instance, Instagram employs AI to detect and remove violating content based on the platform’s Community Guidelines proactively. Facebook utilizes AI to deliver personalized experiences, while Snapchat introduced an AI chatbot called “My AI” to interact with users. Additionally, Instagram is reportedly testing an AI chatbot of its own.

The AI-generated summary feature on YouTube was introduced on a recent Monday but is currently available for a select number of videos. Furthermore, it is currently accessible only in English.

As AI continues to advance and become more integrated into various platforms, users can expect more efficient and personalized experiences across social media and other digital services. YouTube’s introduction of AI-generated summaries demonstrates its commitment to enhancing content selection for users and adapting to the evolving landscape of digital media consumption.
