X/Twitter’s Crackdown: Over 500,000 Indian Accounts Banned

In a recent move, Elon Musk’s social media platform, formerly known as Twitter, has taken stringent action against policy violations by banning over 500,000 accounts in India. The ban, enforced between January 26 and February 25, targeted accounts involved in promoting terrorism and facilitating child sexual exploitation. Users are urged to adhere to platform policies to avoid suspension.

Total Number of Accounts Banned Reports from Reuters indicate that a staggering 506,173 accounts were banned for promoting child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity. Additionally, 1,982 accounts were suspended for promoting terrorism. This brings the total number of banned accounts during the specified period to 508,155 in India. The platform received approximately 14,421 complaints from Indian users through its grievance redressal mechanisms, along with 41 requests regarding account suspensions.

Response from the Platform In response to queries, the platform stated, “We overturned 1 of these account suspensions after reviewing the specifics of the situation. The remaining reported accounts remain suspended.” Furthermore, the platform received 71 requests related to general questions about accounts during this period.

Continued Enforcement of Policies This enforcement of policies isn’t new for the platform. Between December 26 and January 25, around 231,215 accounts were banned in India. During the same period, the platform also suspended 1,945 accounts for promoting terrorism.

Tips to Avoid Account Suspension To prevent your account from being suspended on the platform, users are advised to refrain from violating its policies. This includes abstaining from posting content related to child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity.
