X to Introduce Audio and Video Calls, but They Come at a Cost

X, formerly known as Twitter, is on the verge of transforming into an “everything app” similar to China’s WeChat under the guidance of CEO Linda Yaccarino. The latest move in this ambitious transformation involves the introduction of audio and video calls, but there’s a catch – these features will be reserved for premium, subscription-only users.

Tech veteran and investor Chris Messina recently uncovered new code within the X app that paves the way for audio and video calls. This development aligns with X’s vision of becoming a comprehensive platform offering a wide range of services beyond traditional tweeting and posting.

According to Messina, “X will be adding audio and video calls shortly.” However, he emphasized that users would need to pay for this feature, taking a subtle jab at Skype by stating, “because Skype is dead.” The feature description reads, “Take messaging to the next level with audio and video calls,” allowing users to choose who they’re comfortable communicating with.

X’s CEO Linda Yaccarino had previously hinted at the platform’s plans to introduce video calls as part of its evolution into an “everything app.” This strategic shift comes after a period of significant changes at the company, including extensive layoffs and platform updates.

Yaccarino, speaking in her first TV interview since becoming X Corp CEO, expressed the company’s determination to break even after these recent transformations. She confirmed that video calls were on the horizon, aligning with the company’s vision of becoming a multi-faceted platform akin to China’s WeChat.

Elon Musk, who now owns X, has long envisioned transforming Twitter into an “everything app” like WeChat. These developments signal a significant shift in the platform’s functionality and capabilities.

In addition to audio and video calls, X is exploring other features, including long-form videos, creator subscriptions, and digital payments. Users can expect to send money directly through X’s Direct Messaging feature in the near future.

While X evolves into a more comprehensive platform, the introduction of premium features like audio and video calls suggests that the company is embracing a subscription-based model to support its ambitious transformation.
