As the tech world eagerly anticipates the next major update from Microsoft, speculations about Windows 12 may need to be put on hold. Recent reports suggest that rather than a new numerical iteration, Microsoft is gearing up for a significant overhaul of Windows 11 with extensive AI integration in the upcoming “version 24H2” system.
According to insights from Windows Central, the new update, slated for release later this year, follows the footsteps of Windows 11’s version 23H2, which debuted in the previous year. Initial rumors hinted at a potential Windows 12, especially considering the expected heavy influence of artificial intelligence. However, recent developments, including the departure of chief product officer Panos Panay, indicate a continuation of the current Windows 11 sequence.
The system update, known by various codenames such as Hudson Valley and Germanium, is set to be provided to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in April for hardware development before its general release. While the comprehensive update for existing Windows 11 users may not be available until at least September, AI-powered PCs with version 24H2 are expected to be unveiled in June.
While certain reports allude to stringent RAM and NPU standards for AI PCs running the next Windows system, the impact on upgrades remains unclear. Windows Central notes that Microsoft plans to employ the “OS swap” method for installing version 24H2, fully replacing the old system version with the new OS. This update style can only be executed when the platform sequence remains consistent, in contrast to the prior 23H2, which saw edits to the already installed system.
Once unleashed, version 24H2 promises an array of features beyond AI integration. Updates encompass performance enhancements, security upgrades, improved user experience, and quality-of-life improvements, all of which have been undergoing testing in Microsoft’s Insider Canary Channel.
Some notable features expected in version 24H2 include:
- Copilot updates and relocation of the Copilot button.
- Dedicated “Copilot in Windows” placement in the Settings app.
- Enhancements to Snap Layouts.
- Updates to File Explorer app, including 7zip and TAR file creation.
- Support for PNG viewing and editing metadata.
- Quick Settings panel updates on the Windows taskbar with pagination.
- Introduction of a refresh button on the Wi-Fi list in the Quick Settings.
- Improved performance of the Quick Settings panel.
Additionally, Microsoft plans significant housekeeping, with the removal of legacy applications such as Cortana, Mail, Calendar, Maps, People, and Movies & TV. Notably, the rich text application WordPad is set to be removed in a future update.
While the naming sequence may be uncertain, version 24H2 promises a host of features and improvements, offering a glimpse into Microsoft’s commitment to evolving the Windows ecosystem.
