WhatsApp Takes Swift Action Against Online Scams: Bans Over 71 Lakh Accounts in India

WhatsApp, the largest messaging platform in India with over 500 million users, revealed that it took decisive action against online scams by banning over 71 lakh accounts in India during November 2023. This move comes in response to the surge in online scams, particularly those occurring on the WhatsApp platform.

The action was executed in adherence to the new IT Rules 2021, showcasing the platform’s commitment to maintaining a secure and trustworthy environment for its users. Even before receiving any user reports, WhatsApp proactively banned 19,54,000 accounts from November 1 to 30.

The term ‘accounts actioned’ encompasses various corrective measures, including both banning and reinstating accounts based on the platform’s evaluation. In November alone, WhatsApp received 8,841 complaint reports, highlighting the significance of combating online scams and ensuring user safety.

To address concerns raised by Indian social media users, the Centre introduced the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC). This committee works in conjunction with WhatsApp’s dedicated team of professionals, reinforcing the platform’s commitment to preventing and combating abuse.

In a parallel development, WhatsApp users on Android will experience a change in chat backup policies. The platform has discontinued the free backup service for Android users, requiring them to consider additional storage options via Google One for backups, aligning with practices similar to iPhone’s iCloud storage limitations.

As online scams continue to pose a threat, WhatsApp’s swift and proactive measures demonstrate a robust commitment to user safety and security.
