WhatsApp Introduces Secret Code: A Step-by-Step Guide to Securing Your Chats

Meta-owned WhatsApp has recently rolled out a new feature, the Secret Code, offering an additional layer of security for users looking to safeguard their private chats. This feature addresses a potential vulnerability in the previous fingerprint lock, providing a more robust solution to protect sensitive conversations. Whether you’re using an Android or iPhone device, the Secret Code feature is accessible, providing a secure way to keep your chats confidential.

Understanding the Need for Secret Code:

While WhatsApp already allowed users to lock their private chats using a fingerprint, there was a perceived risk associated with it. The fingerprint lock relied on the same fingerprint authentication used to unlock the phone itself, creating a potential loophole if someone managed to register their fingerprint on the device. In response to this, WhatsApp introduced the Secret Code feature to enhance privacy and make locked chats more secure.

How the Secret Code Works:

The Secret Code feature allows users to set a unique password, distinct from the phone unlock code, adding an extra layer of protection to locked chats. Activating the ‘Hide locked chats’ option in chat lock settings ensures that these conversations are not visible in the chat list, adding an additional level of obscurity. To access locked chats, users need to enter the set secret code into the search bar.

Simplified Process for Locking Chats:

Locking chats with the new Secret Code feature is a streamlined process. Users can follow these simple steps:

  1. Open the WhatsApp app and press and hold the chat that you want to lock.
  2. Tap the three dots at the top right and choose ‘Lock chat’.
  3. Click ‘Continue’ and use your fingerprint or face unlock for authentication.

Your selected chats are now securely locked. To open them, simply swipe up on the Chats tab and select Locked Chats.

Setting Up a Secret Code:

Creating a secret code for locked chats is a straightforward process:

  1. Navigate to the ‘Locked Chats’ window.
  2. Click on the ‘Secret Code’ option, and WhatsApp will guide you to create a code. The code can be an emoji or a word with at least four characters.
  3. Enter your secret code, click on OK, and you’re done.

With these simple steps, users can ensure an extra layer of security for their private conversations on WhatsApp.
