WhatsApp Chat Backup to Consume Google Drive Storage: Android Users Brace for Change

WhatsApp, the popular messaging app, has initiated a significant update for Android beta users, indicating that chat backups will now contribute to Google Drive storage usage. Users on both the free and paid versions of Google’s Cloud storage have reported facing storage constraints after this update. While currently affecting beta users, there is speculation that this change might extend to all users in the future.

The new policy means users will need to strategize their Google Drive storage to accommodate both WhatsApp chats and other media files. With Google offering 15GB of free storage on Drive for documents, files, photos, and videos, users are urged to manage their storage efficiently. Despite alternative options, such as using the phone’s built-in WhatsApp tool for chat transfers, Google Drive backups are favored for their flexibility and reliability.

How to Transfer WhatsApp Chats Without Google Drive:

For users who prefer not to back up chats to their Google Account, WhatsApp Chat Transfer can be used for transferring chats between Android devices. Follow these steps:

  1. Launch WhatsApp on the old device.
  2. Navigate to More Options > Settings > Chats > Transfer chats > Start.
  3. Grant necessary permissions and prepare to scan the QR code on the new device.
  4. Download and open WhatsApp on the new device, complete the setup process.
  5. Accept terms and conditions, verify the phone number.
  6. Initiate chat history transfer by tapping Start.
  7. Allow required permissions and observe the QR code.
  8. Scan the QR code on the new device with the old device.
  9. Accept connection invitation on the new device to link it with the old one.
  10. Keep both devices unlocked during the transfer; a progress bar indicates completion.
  11. Messaging is temporarily paused during the transfer, cancelable at any point.
  12. Once import is finished, tap Done.

WhatsApp assures users will receive a 30-day advance notice before this update becomes public, expected in the first half of 2024. Official confirmation from WhatsApp is awaited.
