Telia Sweden has emerged successfully from the recent mobile frequency band auction held by the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS). This significant development showcases Telia Sweden’s commitment to bolstering its digital footprint and advancing Sweden’s digitization efforts. The auction, which took place from September 19 to the present day, resulted in Telia securing valuable spectrum allocations across three key bands: 900 MHz, 2.1 GHz, and 2.6 GHz. These licenses, with durations spanning 23 to 25 years, are poised to play a pivotal role in Telia’s mission to elevate its 4G and 5G services.
Telia’s Spectrum Triumph
In the 900 MHz band, Telia Sweden secured 2×15 MHz, while in the 2.1 GHz band, the allocation was 2×20 MHz. Additionally, the 2.6 GHz band witnessed Telia’s acquisition of 2×30 MHz. Historically, these bands have been instrumental in supporting Sweden’s 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, catering to a significant portion of the nation’s mobile network traffic.
A Boost for Coverage and Capacity
Telia Sweden has big plans for the spectrum it has secured. The aim is to harness this spectrum to amplify the coverage and capacity of its 4G and 5G networks. This expansion isn’t limited to urban centers; Telia Sweden intends to bridge connectivity gaps in rural areas and enhance services along high-traffic railway routes connecting major cities like Gavle, Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmo. With this move, Telia Sweden is doubling down on its commitment to extending its digital reach.
License Validity and Payment Terms
The licenses granted to Telia Sweden come with varying validity periods. For the 900 MHz band, the licenses will remain in effect from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2048. In contrast, the licenses for the 2.1 GHz and 2.6 GHz bands are valid from January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2050.
Regarding payment terms, Telia will initiate the process by remitting 50 percent of the total price, which amounts to approximately SEK 780 million, within 30 days. The remaining 50 percent will be settled by the end of 2025, in accordance with the agreed-upon terms.
Elevating Sweden’s Digital Future
With the launch of Sweden’s first extensive public 5G network in Stockholm in 2020, Telia Sweden has been at the forefront of digital innovation. The recent spectrum acquisitions further solidify the company’s position, promising a brighter digital future for Sweden and setting the stage for remarkable advancements in 4G and 5G services.
